URGENT NOTICE RE: SEASONAL INFLUENZA VACCINATION FOR CHILDREN UNDER 5 YEARS OLD

•    The Western Australian Health Department has reported an increase in fever and febrile convulsions in   children aged 5 years and under following seasonal flu vaccination.
•    Fever and febrile convulsions are recognised adverse reactions following immunisation in small children and generally have no long term consequences. It is unclear whether the reported increase in WA is simply because of a higher vaccination rate this year, or a real increase in the rate of febrile convulsions.
•    The temporary suspension of the program for children aged 5 years and under is a precautionary measure while the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) urgently reviews data from WA to determine what factors were involved in the adverse reactions seen in WA. A similar situation has not been reported in NSW but further investigation is underway.
•    Seasonal flu vaccination for people six years of age and over continues to be recommended.
•    The Australian Government’s Department of Health and Ageing has issued a press release with more information. This is available from: http://www.health.gov.au under ‘media centre’ and ‘Departmental media releases’.
•    There do not appear to be any implications for the swine flu vaccines (Panvax® and Panvax Junior®), which can continue to be administered to people aged six months and older.

National Influenza and Pneumococcal Immunisation Program 2010

The annual National Influenza and Pneumococcal Immunisation Program will commence on 2 March 2009
Influenza and pneumococcal vaccines will be provided free of charge to all:
•persons aged 65 years and older;
•Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 50 years and older; and
•Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 15-49 years who fit the criteria for high risk groups as recommended by the National Health and Medical Research Council in the current edition of The Australian Immunisation Handbook.

A final reminder about Gardasil.

The FREE program finishes in 35 days and according to CSL, the manufacturer of GarDASIL, there are in the order of 300 - 500 000 women and girls who have not completed all three doses of Gardasil.

• The HPV register is no longer sending reminders to patients… so please make an appointment as soon as possible if you have not completed the required schedule of three doses.

The pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza is a new type of influenza virus. In most cases it is a mild illness but for some people this influenza can cause serious health complications or death. This vaccination program will protect people from infection, minimise the amount of influenza virus circulating in the community and help protect against future waves of the virus. Any individual wishing to be vaccinated should see their General Practitioner or Health Care provider.

Due to the recent outbreak of Pertussis (Whopping Cough) the NSW Health Department are offering Free Pertussis Vaccine for:

- New Parents

- Couples who are planning a pregnancy (both parents)

- Grandparents and other adults who regularly care for the infant (less than 12 months of age)
